A trope of startup investing is that the most successful founders set out to solve their own problems. It is perhaps telling that one of the few areas of tech dominated by female founders in a post-MeToo world is tech geared to mitigate toxicity and harassment. “When I came into the tech industry, I think I just felt really really lucky to be allowed in the door,” Jessica Collier, founder of US reporting tool Spot, told Insider. “It definitely led me into situations where I was like: ‘Oh, this is just the kind of behavior that you have to accept.’ The cost of entry is having these interactions, primarily with white men in the tech industry who wield a lot of power, that are uncomfortable and inappropriate.” Spot helps employees raise issues at work and navigate difficult conversations, and counts clients such as Asos and Stripe.
